Frequently asked questions
What should I look for when choosing an eye consultant?+
It's worth checking that your consultant is a GMC-registered ophthalmologist (FRCOphth), has training or fellowships in the area you need, and plenty of experience in your specific procedure. If you're not sure where to start, just get in touch and we'll help you find the right person.
Can I choose my own consultant?+
As a private patient, you can choose the Newmedica clinic you'd like to attend, and our clinics are owned and led by the consultant ophthalmologists who care for you. If you're an NHS patient, you have the legal right to choose who provides your care, so you can ask your optician or GP to refer you to us, or ask to move if you're already on a waiting list elsewhere.
How experienced are your consultants?+
Our clinics are owned and led by the consultant ophthalmologists who treat you, and between them they've carried out over 10,000 cataract procedures. Many hold specialist fellowships or lead services in their field, so you're in very experienced hands.
Do I need a referral to see a consultant?+
Not always. If you're paying privately you don't need a referral, so you can simply contact your chosen clinic, use your private medical insurance, or ask your optician or GP to refer you. For NHS treatment your optician or GP will refer you, and if you'd like to come to Newmedica, just let them know.
